The Advantages of Wool

It's Natural

Merino wool is a natural, renewable fiber. Did you know one sheep can grow four to five pounds of wool per year? Plus, this fiber has evolved over the years to keep sheep comfortable in harsh environments. These happy animals hang out in temperatures ranging from 5 degrees to 95 degrees without a problem. It’s a pretty amazing fiber.

It Helps Regulate Body Temperature

When it’s cold outside, the natural crimps and bends in its fibers trap air, insulating you. When it’s warm outside, it transports sweat quickly away from the skin, helping to keep you cool and dry. Thus, helping keep your body at a stable temperature.

It Helps Keep You Dry and Sweat-Free

Merino wool transports sweat and moisture away from skin as a vapor. Merino fibers are inherently porous, so moisture vapor can get through —meaning you're not left feeling wet, cold, and clammy after any activity. Synthetic fabrics are not porous. They usually wick sweat when it’s already a liquid, and then your body has to heat it up to evaporate it—making you feel clammy in colder weather. Merino takes a step out of the process, which helps you stay warm and dry when you’re moving and playing outdoors.

It Resists Odors

Merino wool is unique in that it absorbs odor caused by bacteria, trapping their smell and keeping them from building up. This means you can wear Merino wool odor-resistant clothing for longer without having to worry about smelling.

It Is Soft

Merino wool is better than traditional wool as it is super-fine and soft. A single Merino wool fiber is ⅓ the diameter of a human hair. It’s so fine, actually, that when it brushes up against skin, it bends out of the way. It can’t be prickly like other wool fibers because it can’t stand up to the weight of itself. So it’s soft. Really soft.

It’s Biodegradable

Merino wool disappears after about 12 months in the ground. That means that, when you’re done with your gear, the earth will take back this fibrous protein composed of amino acids—releasing carbon and nutrients back into the soil.

It Helps Provide UPF Protection

Depending on how they’re spun and dyed, Merino fibers help block out harmful rays from the sun (UPF 20+).

About Smartwool

The Smartwool community is a collection of people who believe that time outside is valuable, restorative, and essential for everyone.

Smartwool started making socks back in 1994, based on their founders simply wanting to be able to ski longer without getting cold toes.

That’s when they discovered the benefits of Merino wool as a performance fabric. It was soft (softer than any wool they had ever felt), moisture-wicking, thermoregulating (warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s warm), sustainable, and odor-neutralizing—helping to keep feet dry, comfortable, and warm for longer than the synthetic socks they were wearing at the time. It worked so well, in fact, that it is used in almost every single item they make.

Smartwool was the first outdoor company to make performance Merino wool ski socks—revolutionizing the category and forever changing the way outdoor enthusiasts viewed their feet.

The whole brand was built on the desire to be comfortable on outdoor adventures — to go farther and experience more. And that drive continues to fuel everything they do. From the Merino wool supply chain to their Smartwool advocacy program to how they design socks and apparel, we exist to help you play, live, and laugh in the great outdoors as often as you would like.

Have you ever worn a wool sweater that feels scratchy and uncomfortable? That's definitely not the case with Smartwool. Their clothing is made from high-quality merino wool, which is soft, cozy, and perfect for a variety of activities.

Merino wool is different from regular wool in that it's super fine and comfortable. It's a natural temperature regulator, which means you can wear Smartwool clothing for anything from a brisk hike to a lazy day at home. The wool has tiny air pockets that trap heat when it's cold and release it when it's warm, so you'll always be comfortable.

Merino wool also has natural antimicrobial properties, which means it resists odor and bacteria growth. You can wear a Smartwool shirt for days on end without worrying about it getting funky. This makes it a great option for outdoor adventures, backpacking trips, or just days when you don't feel like doing laundry.

Smartwool makes a variety of products, but their socks are particularly popular. They're made from a mix of merino wool and synthetic materials for durability and stretch. And let's be real, who doesn't want to wear cozy socks in fun colors and patterns?

But Smartwool isn't just for the outdoorsy types. Their clothing is versatile enough to wear for any occasion. Whether you're hitting the gym, running errands, or going out with friends, Smartwool has got you covered.
