The Birkenstock Brand
Birkenstock, a German brand, relies on tradition and heritage as important aspects that make up their brand. This brand hasn’t been around for years or even decades, but centuries. Birkenstock believes in crafting premium quality shoes that look good and are good for you. Since 1774, Birkenstock has passed this commitment down from one generation to the next. The result is footwear that is superb in quality, comfort and support.
Birkenstock Sizing + Fit
Birkenstocks run in two different widths: narrow and regular. Each are used by Birkenstock, and many times a certain style only comes in one or the other, depending on how the sandal upper and straps fit the foot.
The Narrow is the most popular and universal fitting. This width easily fits a skinny-medium to a medium-thick and wide foot. To help distinguish the difference, imagine that the skinny foot is like a nice Italian sausage from Tenuta’s, where the thick and wide foot is more the the dry-cured soppressata sitting on top of the deli counter. The narrow is the most universal because most Birkenstock styles’ straps will hug a skinnier foot more comfortably and are still able to open and adjust for a wider, thicker foot. When sizing, going with a standard conversion is recommended.
The Regular width is a little on the trickier side, and yet Birkenstock does make many styles only available in this width. The way a regular fits is truly more of a wide width to an extra-wide width foot. Look, most people nowadays have no idea what a Ritz stick or Brannock device is and haven’t been measured since 1997. A lot has happened since then, Cubs won a world series… that is all that matters. Anyways, the regular width can be tricky. If you are a true extra-wide of wider, go with your standard size. If you happen to be more of a nice Italian sausage, a medium width, and you really want the style that only comes in a regular, you size down. Don’t hesitate, you should be fine as long as the straps are adjustable, you’re all good.
So, don’t let Birkenstock sizing scare you. It’s not rocket science, but our 98 years of fitting feet allows us to say comfortably that everyone should love Birkenstocks. They’re good for you and they mold right to your foot. So when it comes to fit, never be afraid to ask!
