Chiappetta Shoes | Jerry Nellessen
It took Jerry Nellessen about a year to recover from being blown off a roof while fighting a fire.“I broke my back, broke my ankle, my leg,…” he said. A side-effect to the many surgeries he had to go through to recover, he found that his legs were not the same length.”
Did that accident alter your life?
It is probably the event that changed the course of my life. Some people don’t think that anything is going to happen to them. So they don’t have a backup plan. I’m one of those people. But it did and it changed my life. It was pretty tough. I was only 41 years old and had to figure out what to do with my life with the limitations that were cast upon me.
How did you get blown off that roof?
I was blow off by an aerial device from the other side of the roof. They didn’t know I was up there. They opened an aerial device and I was a recipient of that stream of water. But you know, knock on wood, I’m still here.
Do you have any side effects from the injuries?
“I have a one-inch leg-length differential. My right leg is longer.”
So are you taller now?
No I’m shorter. I had some other injuries that caused me to be a little shorter.
How does it affect your daily life?
Well, with that leg length differential if I don’t have an insert then I’m going to be walking lopsided. That can cause injuries to other parts of my body such as my knee and hip.
Chiappetta Shoes builds that insert for your shoes?
It’s very hard to find quality shoe stores or pedorthists that can actually do the work to put a one-inch sole in a shoe and they’re one of the few around that can do that.
So it improves your everyday life?
“Oh absolutely. I mean if you’re walking kind of lopsided you’re going to have pain in your hip and right up to your back. So having those inserts reduces the amount of stress that you’re putting on other parts of your body. “
You are the Beach Park Community Development Director. What does your job entail?
I oversee the planning and zoning functions of the village: code enforcement, building inspections, special projects and emergency management.
How did you get into this line of work?
I have always done building plan review and inspection work. I pursued the certifications for building inspection while I was still with the fire service and was able to carry that on after I retired.
What shoes are you wearing today?
I’m wearing Red Wings eight-inch boots. I primarily wear them if I have to go out and do field work. I’m a working supervisor so I go out and do inspections and wear these two to three days a week. They’re sturdy, they’re very sturdy. They give me a lot of stability. They have safety toes.
Are they ceramic toes?
Correct. The advantage is that it does not conduct the heat so you’re not going to freeze in the winter, which in this neck of the woods is a good thing.
How many of these do you own?
I have a spare pair here at work and I have another spare pair at home. I try and keep my older pairs so I can use spares in case I don’t bring them.
How do they make you feel?
Comfortable, really comfortable. I don’t have to think about my feet, the whole day.
It sounds like you are a convert to the brand.
Oh the brand is really good. I’ve never had a problem with them. I know people who have other types of shoes and are replacing them more often than I replace mine. It says a lot about the quality of the shoe.
How long have you been going to Chiappetta?
I would say that I’ve been going there about 14 years.
Do you have other shoes besides your work boots?
I do. I have other shoes that I bought there and I’ve had the same thing done to those. I have dress shoes. I have everyday shoes. I have athletic shoes, all with the same type of lift in it, all from Chiappetta.
What do you like about Chiappetta?
I don’t need an appointment. Everybody is friendly. They’re very knowledgeable about their products. Anyone can tell you about the products and if there is a question that your salesperson can not answer, one of the other people there will know. I have never had a problem with anything that they have done for me, so I keep going back.
