The saying “New Year, New You” is NOT for 2021. After going through what we all went through in 2020, this year is more about “New Year, Clean Slate”.  Let’s leave the tarnished and negativity behind, but let’s not forget the powerful lessons we learned as we navigated those unchartered waters. 

I happen to be a fan of new year’s resolutions because essentially resolutions are goals. Goals are good! I do suggest those resolutions should be realistic in their approach and the process should be enjoyable as well. Restrictive eating, excessive exercise…no one’s here for that!  What we are here for are ways we can improve our health by adding tidbits of goodness into our daily routines.

Here are 5 realistic wellness practices you can add to your daily/weekly routine that will surely benefit your health.

1. Move Your Body Every Day 

This doesn’t necessarily mean a 5-mile run or burpees, but you gotta move it! Chiapetta’s will find you the perfect shoes too!  Even 3 10 minute walks a day are super beneficial for your metabolism, neurological health, and mood!

2. Drink ALL the water!

Yup. You need a lot of it.  Many times when we feel lethargic, we really just need water, sunlight, and fresh air.

3. Cut back on sugar

Notice I did not say cut OUT sugar. Take note of the amount of added sugar you consume regularly (this takes some reading of nutritional labels) and try to decrease it by X amount of grams the first week and then decrease a little more the next and so on.

4. Add more protein into your meals and snacks.

Protein rich foods are more than just animal products. Beans, grains, hemp seeds, Greek or plant-based yogurt, tofu are just a few to add into your day. Bump up your protein and decrease your simple carbohydrates to improve your blood sugar balance.

5. Connect with others

Yes, I realized it’s still “Covid,” but there are still ways to safely connect with others, and it’s essential we do so. Outdoor walks with friends are the new happy hour. Or how about a virtual dinner party? We thrive on the human connection and it plays an essential role in our overall wellness.  

To piggyback on these ideas here is a super quick, healthy, and delicious soup recipe to support your “clean slate.” This soup has all the foods I like to see in a meal. Protein, fiber, greens, and flavor!  I hope you enjoy it.

Chicken and White Bean Soup with Lemon and Dill

Prep Time: 35 minutes

Serves: 6 

8 cups chicken stock

3 cups diced or shredded cooked chicken

2 cans cannellini beans, drained and rinsed

2 tbsp olive oil

1 cup chopped onion

1 cup chopped celery

1 cup chopped carrots

4 cups fresh spinach

2 cloves garlic, chopped

Juice of a lemon

¼ cup fresh dill



In a large pot drizzle in the olive oil and heat over medium heat. Add the celery, carrots, and onion. Season with salt and pepper.  Cook, stirring occasionally for about 5 minutes, until veggies start to soften. Add the chopped garlic, cooking an additional minute. 

Next add the chicken stock, cooked chicken, and beans.  Bring the soup to a simmer and cook for about 15 minutes, or until the veggies are tender to your liking.  Stir in the lemon juice and dill.  Season with additional salt and pepper if necessary.  Enjoy!
